Accuplacer Information

Learn how placement testing works and whether you need to complete Accuplacer before registering.

Accuplacer Placement Testing

Before you can register for classes, WNMU may need to determine your placement in college-level Math and English. This is done through Accuplacer testing unless qualifying scores or transfer credit already meet the requirement.

You may not need placement testing. WNMU will review your ACT, SAT, GED, HiSET, transfer credit, or prior college coursework to determine whether testing is needed.

What Is Accuplacer?

  • Accuplacer helps determine your placement in Math and English courses.
  • It is used before registration when placement information is still needed.
  • You may only need part of the test, depending on your prior scores or credit.

You May Not Need Placement Testing

  • You may be exempt based on ACT, SAT, GED, HiSET, or transfer credit.
  • If you met some requirements but not all, you may only need a specific portion of the test.
  • WNMU will review your information to determine what is still needed.

  • If you are a transfer student, you may not need placement testing if you passed a college-level English and Mathematics course with a C or better.
  • Transfer credit will be reviewed to help determine whether testing is still necessary.
  • You can test in Silver City or Deming.
  • You can also use Accuplacer Remote Testing.
  • The Testing Coordinator can help you locate a convenient testing center and provide a remote voucher.
  • Your first set of Accuplacer tests is free.
  • Retesting requires a $10 seating fee.
  • If you retest, bring your payment receipt with you on test day.

You can view Accuplacer testing days and available dates on the WNMU Testing Calendar.

It takes about 24 hours for Accuplacer scores to be entered into WNMU’s system. Once your scores are posted, you can schedule an appointment with the Advising Center to register for classes.

  • Accuplacer scores are only valid for one year.
  • If you retest, bring your receipt with you.
