Weโ€™re so happy youโ€™ve chosen to create your future with us at Western New Mexico University. As a newly admitted student, you may be wondering what comes next. Use this roadmap to complete key tasks and get ready for your first semester.

Start early. Completing these steps ahead of time can help you avoid delays with advising, registration, financial aid, course materials, and payment deadlines.

New Student Roadmap

1. Complete Financial Aid

  • Submit your FAFSA for the upcoming academic year.
  • Check Mustang Express for missing documents.
  • Complete and submit any required Financial Aid forms.

2. Send Your Transcripts

  • Submit official high school or GED transcripts.
  • Submit official college transcripts from prior institutions.
  • Make sure all transcripts are received for evaluation.

3. Complete Accuplacer if Needed

  • Determine whether placement testing is required.
  • Use ACT, SAT, GED, HiSET, or transfer credit if eligible.
  • Schedule testing in Silver City, Deming, or remotely if needed.

4. Register for Classes

  • Review the course schedule.
  • Check your degree requirements.
  • Meet with advising if you need help choosing classes.

5. Get Your Textbooks and Course Materials

  • Review WNMU Access and bookstore materials.
  • Locate course materials in Canvas if needed.

6. Set Up a Payment Plan

  • Pay your bill or enroll in a payment plan before classes begin.
  • Use Mustang Express and Business Office resources if you need help.

Watch for FAFSA opening, registration periods, non-payment disenrollment, and add/drop deadlines.

  • Sign up for orientation if you have not already done so.
  • Learn the campus, meet people, and get connected.
  • If you plan to live on campus, complete housing steps early.
  • Review meal plan options and housing information.
